The Alpha Bank Chair of the Board at the Delphi Forum
Absence of essential accountability a weakness
While participating in the panel discussion on “Restoration of Democracy: The Greek Economy over the years and the lessons learnt”, Alpha Bank Board Chair Vassileios Rapanos highlighted the need to reach consensus in Greece in key issues that determine the progress of the economy, such as transparency and accountability, both in the public and private sector. Through a short evaluation of the economic policy in the years of the political changeover, Mr Vassileios Rapanos referred to the challenges of that period and the progress achieved, but also the weaknesses that remain to date.
As he noted, the grounds of the recent financial crisis and its extended duration are linked to the absence of reliable institutions which can block policies that undermine the financial stability of the economy, promote productive investments and provide services of the highest quality to citizens.
“I am not one of the pessimists; significant achievements happened in the years of the political changeover, but what we need is to understand and try to apply the lessons we learnt,” concluded Mr Rapanos.
